Magnolia River was able to process over 20 million features, from 14 states, in under 20 hours. This significant achievement was eclipsed only by the effort required to complete the total migration effort, which required over 50 individual steps in the migration process for each state.
CHALLENGE:
To ensure the current and future existence of high-quality geographic information system (GIS) data, coinciding with the implementation of industry-leading technology, one of the largest water utilities in the country enlisted Magnolia River to help them develop a data model to support standardization across the organization, while still providing flexibility for state-specific content.
ACTIONS TAKEN:
Magnolia River leveraged Esri’s Data Interoperability Extension in the development of custom scripts and transformers to support one of the largest GIS migration efforts for a water utility. The new streamlined database models incorporate a combination of core (features and attributes shared across all states) and flex (state specific content) components.
The migration process involved several orchestrated steps, migration scripts, manual processes and close coordination with the utility’s IT and DBA teams. The migration scripts were designed to ingest and transform the current production data into the proper location and structure of the new data models. The scripts were tested, updated and re-tested to ensure no loss of data content. Multiple quality control checks were instituted to help manage the data migration process.
RESULTS
Magnolia River was able to process over 20 million features, from 14 states, in under 20 hours. This significant achievement was eclipsed only by the effort required to complete the total migration effort, which required over 50 individual steps in the migration process for each state. Through this data migration effort, Magnolia River was able to help the utility establish an enterprise GIS foundation layer within their organization.
